Background of the Study :
The availability of qualified physical education teachers is a critical component in the successful implementation of physical education programs in primary schools. In Sokoto North Local Government Area, Sokoto State, ensuring that schools have access to trained and competent physical education professionals is essential for promoting the physical, social, and cognitive development of students. Qualified teachers bring not only subject matter expertise but also the pedagogical skills necessary to engage young learners in physical activities effectively (Umar, 2023). Recent trends in education have underscored the importance of early exposure to structured physical activity as a means to instill lifelong habits of health and wellness. In this context, the shortage or uneven distribution of qualified physical education teachers can severely undermine the quality of instruction and the overall impact of physical education programs. Several studies have highlighted that schools with well-qualified physical education staff are more likely to implement innovative curricula that encourage active participation, improve motor skills, and foster teamwork among students (Sadiq, 2024). However, in Sokoto North, challenges such as limited training opportunities, budget constraints, and a lack of incentives have contributed to a significant shortfall of qualified physical education professionals. This study seeks to critically appraise the current status of qualified physical education teachers in primary schools within the region. By examining teacher recruitment, training programs, and retention rates, the research aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the factors affecting the availability of qualified staff. Furthermore, the study will explore how the presence or absence of skilled physical education teachers influences the quality of instruction and the overall effectiveness of physical education programs. The findings are expected to inform policy decisions and drive initiatives to improve teacher training, recruitment, and professional development in physical education (Sadiq, 2024). This, in turn, will contribute to enhancing the overall health and educational outcomes of primary school students in Sokoto North.
Statement of the Problem :
Despite the recognized importance of qualified physical education teachers in delivering effective physical education programs, primary schools in Sokoto North face persistent challenges in securing and retaining such professionals. Many schools report a significant shortage of trained physical education teachers, which adversely affects the quality of instruction and limits students’ exposure to structured physical activities. Contributing factors include inadequate teacher training programs, budgetary limitations, and a lack of professional incentives that encourage educators to specialize in physical education (Umar, 2023). The resulting teacher shortage compromises the development of comprehensive physical education curricula and diminishes opportunities for students to engage in physical activities that promote health and social skills. Additionally, the uneven distribution of available qualified teachers means that some schools benefit from skilled instruction while others are left with untrained or underqualified personnel. This discrepancy not only affects student performance in physical education but also has broader implications for overall academic achievement and child development. The problem is further exacerbated by the limited career progression opportunities available for physical education teachers, which discourages potential candidates from entering the profession. This study aims to investigate the underlying causes of the shortage of qualified physical education teachers in Sokoto North and to assess the impact of this deficiency on the effectiveness of physical education programs in primary schools. By identifying key challenges and exploring potential solutions, the research seeks to provide actionable recommendations that can help bridge the gap between the current state of teacher availability and the desired standard of physical education in the region (Sadiq, 2024).
